About Ben

I spent 10 years in the Marine Corps Reserve, one year as part of an anti-terrorism force in California and one combat tour in Iraq.  I just finished a year long tour as a private security contractor in Iraq.  I have a wife and one young son.  I grew up in Sountern California, but now live in Central Texas.  I started Modern Self Protection to teach every-day people how to aviod being a victim of crime.  My goal, the evil of the world should fear the good.

Gun Collections

The media is always saying, “oh my god, look at how many guns and how much ammunition that person has!”

It really isn’t that many. Ladies, how many purses do you have? Guys, how much sports stuff do you have? That is how many guns a shooter has. Then he has ammunition for all of them. The ammunition becomes like extra food in the pantry. It’s on sale, so I’ll use it eventually. Do that for a couple years, and how much would you end up with?

The news doesn’t tell the entire truth. Find out the whole story before you say, “oh my God!”

What should you be worried about in gun collections when you see them on the news? Worry if there is over 100,000 rounds of ammunition, and/or if someone has dozens of the exact same gun (if they show pictures and it looks like they are all exact copies).

If there is nothing else but some guns on the news, it’s a slow news day and they are trying to build fear so you will watch.

Modern Self Protection motto is part of what this blog is about, “No one should live in fear!” The way to do that is knowledge.

Continue to learn and be a student for the rest of your life. Learn the entire story from the news before making a decision.

Stay Safe,

Ben

Air Travel

Another attempted bombing on Christmas, and more changes to security.  Politically everyone wants to look like they are doing something, whether they are or not.

The Christmas bombing attempt wasn’t a failure of American Airport Security; it was a failure by another country.  We can’t control what the rest of the world does.

Everyone wants more regulations and safety at airport security.  The problem is we are always one step behind.  The security regulations are put in after something happens.  On the other hand, people won’t submit to further security checks unless they think they are necessary.  Who would have taken off their shoes before the shoe bomber?

Now there is more talk about individually screening passengers with a type of x-ray machine that always the user to look through the persons’ close and see anything and everything underneath.

What’s the answer?  Not the one anyone wants to hear.  Sometimes you have to trust the people in security.  When they say something is needed, it probably is.  I know the guy that originally put together TSA’s policies after 9/11.  He’s one of the smartest in the industry.  TSA know what they are doing.  Allow security to do their job, it’s not easy, and they are doing it well.

Stay Safe,

Ben

Things that go Boom!

Last Wednesday a live grenade was brought to a police sub-station in San Antonio (Story Link).  The guy had it in his home for 10 years.  He found it in his father’s house after dad died.

Don’t play with things that go boom.  If you find something, or you think you found something.  Back away, and call police.  Something like a grenade (the size of a large man’s fist) should be given at least 50 yards.  Keep people way from it, if you can. You keep you safe, first.  When the police arrive, tell them everything you can about it, and let them handle it.

Be careful with this old stuff.  Even military grade (read safe devices) can go off unintentionally.  Things like movement and radio signals can set them off.  Like I teach Marines, if you don’t know exactly what is, what it does, and how it got there, don’t mess with it.  Many will speculate about anything, but you don’t want to be around the guy that is playing with it.  A pro will start by telling you to keep a distance why they look at it.

Stay Safe,

Ben
